Karen Walker has given Auckland-based designer Adrian Hailwood the nod as the new name to watch by sharing her limelight with him. When Walker won the Air New Zealand-sponsored Fashion Week Export growth award in October, she promised to share the $20,000 prize money with an up-and-coming designer and Hailwood is her man.
The prize will allow both style makers to travel to London Fashion Week in February, where Walker will present her latest collection during and off-schedule show as well as introducing her new protege to all the movers and shakers in the industry. "Adrians clearly hungry to grow his business and to export, and his latest collection is thoughtful and has a fresh look which is important in terms of potential export success," Walker told the New Zealand Herald. "Also I think having a label that shares some common values and moods with mine is a benefit too as there's an easier fit with the people I'll be able to introduce him to"...

Garbo goes on an African holiday
A taste of the tropics was a hot favourite on day three... Adrian Hailwood plundered Greta Garbo's on-holiday-in-Marrakesh wardrobe for his show... Some Holiday.
The enthusiastic fashion set were thinking of a jaunt there almost immediately after his show if they got to tour in his beautiful paisley satin, brilliant camel and wallpaper prints on a range of T-shirts, dresses, jeans and cool silver and blue flat domed boots.
The clever graphic designer turned fashion designer really proved his star is on the rise...

Hailwood - Casual Glamour
There's a print on one of Hailwood's T-shirts that says a lot about why so many local women are clamouring for his work. It's a picture of a woman in a bikini bra and pants, eyes closed, smoking a cigarette with her arm elegantly outstretched. She's beautiful and feminine but at the same time she's also sexy and, because of the cigarette, even a little rough. "It's casual and glamourous at the same time," is how designer Adrian Hailwood, who also works as an illustrator and in an art department for television commercials, describes his work.
